She is enthralled by the life Conwell can offer her and falls in love with him. Meanwhile her brother [[Valentin]] is suffering from an addiction to Conwell’s cough syrup. She tries to help her brother to stop using and encourages him to stop boxing as well, but ultimately is unable to save him. She is given a book by her friend [[Emma]] at the lake, “The Souls of Black People”. The possession of the cough syrup as well as the book leads to her arrest by [[Officer Harold]]. She is broken out of jail by Emma and they share a quiet moment together at the lake. She is given a pair of red ballet shoes she has been coveting by [[Mephisto]] after her love for Conwell grows, harkening the end of her normal life as a dancer, and the beginning of a potential life with Conwell. Conwell asks her to perform at a party showing the world the gem that he has found. Valentin’s plight pulls her from her fantasy life with Conwell back to her grim reality. After the party, and due to [[Dr. Kellogg]]’s work on Valentin, Valentin is distraught and in a great deal of pain. She takes him back to their apartment and attempts to save him by procuring more syrup, but she is too late. In despair she takes a hammer to her feet in an effort to stop herself from ever dancing again.
